The comfort zone: the barrier to growth

We need to keep up with the changes in our world. And for us to that, we need to constantly learn and reskill ourselves. Learning and reskilling require us to constantly reach out to learn new information and skills, and update our current ones with what’s relevant today. Reskilling also requires us to get beyond our usual and comfort to learn new and unexplored topics.

But that’s the first issue. As humans, we’re comfortable being, well, comfortable. Not many will actively seek out constant discomfort. But, this is the only thing standing in our way towards our growth. We cannot expect to grow without getting out of this comfort.

The very important aspect of change is the discomfort you will inevitably feel. So, here are some ways to make that step towards discomfort a little easier.

Take a step at a time towards your discomfort

Don’t jump into discomfort and expect that you’ll immediately get used to it. You’re in risk of overwhelming yourself and end up just avoiding it in the future. Take a step at a time and get used to it slowly.

Learn more about anything and everything

Sometimes, the reason we’re uncomfortable is that we don’t know a great deal about the direction we’re going to take. A great way to ease into discomfort is to learn as much as you can about the topic.

Create a plan and just do it

Another great way to ease into discomfort is some form of planning. Plan out your direction and goals, and how you’re going to achieve them, but never forget to begin and implement those plans.

Make room for some mistakes and failures

One of the other reasons we like staying in our comfort zones is because we naturally do not like making mistakes and failing. The thing about growth and success is that we can’t achieve them if we don’t make mistakes. If we allow some failure, we’re well on our way to getting comfortable in the discomfort zone.

When it comes to stepping into the discomfort zone, don’t overthink it too much and just begin. Sometimes, the best way to get out of your comfort zone is to get used to feeling that discomfort. Don’t wait and get uncomfortable so you too can grow and reach for higher success.
