Use the power of mindset to expand your learning potential
Our mindset has a great impact on our lives. Whatever we do, whatever we say and however we react, it is shaped through our mindset. Mindset is the combination of all our beliefs, values and experiences that define how we see the world, and it is constantly being reshaped through new experiences.
It is not clear when the term “mindset” first came into general use, but it has taken on greater meaning for those interested in human growth and development in the past decade or so. This has a lot to do with the publication in 2006 of the book Mindset by Carol Dweck, a professor of psychology at Stanford University.
Prof Dweck introduced many general readers to the concept of the growth mindset and the fixed mindset. A person with a growth mindset sees setbacks as opportunities to learn and grow, while a person with a fixed mindset in the same situation will conclude that something happened because of their lack of ability, which they see as something fixed.
Dr. Terry C Warner, another American academic, author and business consultant, shines a slightly different light on the subject, distinguishing between outward and inward mindsets. An outward mindset sees other people as people, and their goals as part of the collective goal, while someone with an inward mindset sees others as obstacles to achieving their own goals.
What the concepts of both authors have in common is that outward and growth mindsets are approached in a positive way, while inward and fixed mindsets are seen as rigid and sometimes negative. We all have positive and negative qualities in us, but it is inevitable that we aim to shift toward a more positive mindset. Let’s look at the reasons why.
First, your mindset is what gets you through adversity. Learning isn’t always easy and as you follow the path toward success, you’ll realize that failure is inevitable. Mindset – growth, outward, or call it what you like — is what will get you going, make you determined to meet your goals and allow you to learn along the way.
Adversity and change in our world seem to be accelerating and are magnified by the rapid advances of growing technology. We’re all just human and change can be difficult. But, humans are known to bend the rules, challenge the status quo and push beyond limits. Change is part of our lives, and with the change, we find new opportunities.
Second, your success — or anything in life really — depends on your mindset. All those things that allow you to learn and grow, especially from negative experiences, are your route to success. But, if you don’t have the right mindset for absorbing these lessons, you’ll definitely fall back.
Success can mean different things to different people. If you’re busy trying to fit into some cookie-cutter definition of success created by others, you’ll never discover new passions and create innovations.
Third, your mindset isn’t just how you view the world and others through your experiences — it is also how you view yourself. This is very important because success requires action and action requires a lot of belief and self-worth. The mindset you choose to have can be the difference between enabling you to act on all your great ideas, versus simply dreaming them up without doing anything.
The fourth and final point is that mindset is what drives behavior. If you want transformation, you need to begin with mindset. Changing one’s behavior is only temporary. You can attend training or learning sessions, act on what you’ve learned every day, but if your mindset is not committed to the change, you’ll soon realize that it doesn’t do anything for the long term.
Mindset is what sustains that you, your team, your organization, and your success. You may have had a series of successes in the past, but is it certain you’ll stay successful? Adopting the growth mindset means that you’ll always see the opportunity to learn and grow while adopting an outward mindset means you’ll see that greater success cannot be achieved if you do everything on your own.
To bring out your learning potential, reskill and transform yourself and achieve new heights of success, you must first begin with your mindset. Ultimately, you control and choose the mindset you want to have. Just because it is difficult, doesn’t mean it’s impossible. To give yourself the best opportunity to achieve positive results, choose the mindset that makes you feel more positive every day.
